SEPAGAN fue dise?ada por la necesidad de generar conciencia en la industria creativa mexicana ante la convocatoria que lanz? la Secretar?a de Educaci?n P?blica para ilustrar los libros de texto gratuitos del ciclo escolar 2021-2022. A cambio de las aportaciones gr?ficas, la Secretar?a propone retribuir a los colaboradores ?nicamente con una constancia, un ejemplar impreso y el cr?dito del autor. Lo anterior reafirma la precarizaci?n constante y la poca valoraci?n social que padece el gremio de ilustradores, misma que se extiende en general a todos los creadores visuales.

Esta nueva fuente de uso libre se inspira en el logotipo legendario ?y ya en desuso? de la SEP, creado en 1977 por los dise?adores Luis Almeida Herrera, Jorge Gleason Peart y Salvador Valdez, en la firma Dise?o Profesional, S.A. Posee un contorno que metaforiza lo burdo y ?mal hecho? como analog?a del tremendo descontento que la convocatoria suscit?. Asimismo, este acabado rugoso permite guardar distancia con respecto a la obra original y evidenciar la iron?a de esta propuesta.

Con esta fuente tipogr?fica recordamos que detr?s de todo representante de la industria creativa hay dinero, tiempo y esfuerzo invertidos en alcanzar la calidad necesaria en su especialidad, por lo que una instituci?n gubernamental tan importante como la SEP ?que adem?s es la encargada del Instituto Nacional del Derecho de Autor? deber?a ser una de las principales promotoras de la retribuci?n adecuada hacia esta labor tan demandante.

Dise?ada por el tip?grafo mexicano Ra?l Plancarte, el alfabeto digital SEPAGAN nace como una forma de protesta por esta causa.

SEPAGAN (as in SEP and [the illustrations] are paid for) is a typeface designed from the need to create awareness in the Mexican creative industry, regarding an open call released by the Public Education Secretariat, which invites the professionals to create illustrations to be published in the forthcoming 2021-2022 basic education textbooks, which are distributed free of charge and used in both public and private schools. In exchange of their graphic works, the Secretariat proposes to ?pay? them only with a certificate, one printed exemplar and the author?s credits. This ?invitation? clearly shows the constant precarious work conditions and the low social value the institutions assign to the illustrators guild, and also to other visual artists.

This free font is inspired in the legendary former logo of the SEP, developed in 1977 by the designers Luis Almeida, JGP Y SV, at the DP SA studio. The rough edges (unfinished, unprofessional) of the characters constitute a visual analogy (or representation) of the strong disgust that the open call for illustrations caused. Also this visual treatment keeps distance with the original logo and emphasizes the ironic tone of this proposal. charge of the National Institute of Copyright? should be one of the main champions in favor of the proper payment and recognition of the illustrators hard labor.

Traced by the Mexican typographer RP, the SEPAGAN digital typeface is born as a protest medium supporting this cause.
